My Favorite Releases of 2020 So Far | Half-Year EOTY

Six months down, six months left to go.

Well. Just like that, the year is half over and good fucking riddance, am I right? The state of the world isn’t exactly in the best shape right now but when it comes to media, the train keeps rolling on by. And while it’s been extremely slow for film releases with every theater closed for the last three and a half months, things like video games and Netflix programs have thrived with everyone’s couches being so heavily occupied.

So, as I do every year, at the year’s half-way mark I like to post my current favorite releases of the year so far just in case anyone reading this is looking for something to watch, play or listen to that they may have missed thus far.

Music has been kind to us in these dark times — The 1975 released what may be their best record, Phoebe Bridgers released what is absolutely her best record and a deep handful of other artists have produced some of my favorite albums in recent memory. Video games have also been a little glimmer of happiness these last few months as well and my hat and millions of other little dweebs’ hats go off to Animal Crossing: New Horizons for taking up hundreds of hours of our time and leaving us, still, craving for more. That game will go down in history in the opposite way that Pokemon Go has — both extremely popular, but one kept us outside walking around for a Summer and then some, and the other immobilized us for the foreseeable future. And don’t even get me started on The Last of Us Part II, while I haven’t finished that piece of art, it’s doing some things to me, guys, god damn.

On top of all that, somehow my two favorite films released so far this year both star Pete Davidson as the lead? I like Pete a whole lot but never did I think that was going to be possible. But Im not complaining — both are fantastic films. And on the television side of things the first half of this year has been nothing but surprises. Dave and Love Life are both shows that I did not expect to love even half as much as I did but both have proven themselves as heavy contenders while the top spot right now is still Kidding, starring Jim Carrey. I said it back on The Morning Brew and I’ll say it again — season two of that show is one of the best seasons of television I have ever seen. Straight up.

So here’s to the last six months and here’s to hoping the next six are a little easier on our mental.
