Probably the biggest music release week of the year!

I STILL haven’t seen Detective Pikachu and I am not thrilled about that. Things got way too busy on Saturday with us having a garage sale and everything that we didn’t get the chance to make it out to the theater. However, we’re definitely going to try to see it this week - whatever it takes (Endgame reference because I don’t want to let Endgame die). Although potentially closing on our house this week might change those plans. There’s just a lot going on and I’m doing my best to keep up with it so if I slip up at all just ACCEPT ME FOR WHO I AM.

In the midst of all of this madness in my life right now I did manage to fit in the time to record 3 podcasts in the last few days! All of them go live today which I know is pretty stupid - I should probably space them out to one a day or something but fuck it, they are all available now and you can listen to them as you’d like to.

One is the second After Hours episode where Alex, Kevin and I talk all about Avengers Endgame and allllllll the spoilers, the next is quite possibly the greatest episode of Funny Business that we’ve recorded thus far and last is, of course, the latest episode of The Morning Brew - which I added some real light jazz in the background of! It sounds super cool! Really proud of all three of those.

Anyways, let’s discuss my recommendations for the week which may seem a bit lazy but whatever.

  • Here’s the deal: new music last week didn’t impress me much - so little, in fact, that I couldn’t bear to take off Vampire Weekend and No Rome’s new releases from the week prior. They are, at this point, my favorite album and EP of the year so far so they’re sticking around another week.

  • As far as what you should watch - I’m doing that thing again where I am recommending something that I haven’t seen myself, as I made clear in the beginning of this post. I know I’m going to love Detective Pikachu. I grew up on Pokemon and I have no doubt in my mind that I will adore this movie even if it isn’t that great. I know what I like, guys.

  • And you should definitely play Shakedown Hawaii. It’s a fun open world 2D retro-looking game that feels like an old school Grand Theft Auto title but even better. It was created by just one guy so please give him your money and give this game a shot if you’re looking for something to sink your teeth into during this pre-3 time of year.

And this week!

  • Rage 2 comes out on Tuesday and I am very, very interested in what the reviews have to say about it. It looks super fun but considering how not super fun that the original Rage was, we all have reason to be skeptical. We should find out tomorrow morning when the review embargo is lifted.

  • Aside from that, honestly, there isn’t much going on until Friday when four of the biggest albums of the year, as far as I’m concerned, are being released. First up, Tyler the Creators new album was just announced last week but here we are, in the week of it’s release and I couldn’t be happier. I hope it’s every bit as good as Flower Boy is.

  • I’m probably equally excited for The National’s new album as I am for Tylers. The singles released so far have been fantastic and I love that it’s a long album with an accompanying film. They’re pulling out all the stops this time around and I am here for it.

  • Slowthai is one of my favorite new rappers and at this point he’s only released EP’s so I cannot wait to see what he can do with a full length album. My hopes are high for him and his career going forward.

  • And lastly, Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album will also be out this Friday and will probably end up being the best pop album of the year. I don’t love all of the singles so far but I’d say I do love about 75% of them. I really want this one to surprise me and that the only songs I don’t like on it are the one or two that I’m indifferent on already.

That’s about it! It’ll be a pretty calm week for releases but just remember that leaks and early announcements of games are going to happen as we approach E3. A lot of developers like to make their announcements beforehand so that it doesn’t accidentally get spoiled so I’m sure by this time next week we’ll have some big news to talk about.

Until next time - listen to those three podcasts!
