This is extremely promising going into the next generation.
Microsoft and Sony have agreed to a partnership going forward where they are going to share assets, most specifically, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft's cloud-based software, to build better tools for content creators.
Microsoft is obviously already using this service but the fact that now Sony will be doing so as well gives us hope that cross-platform gaming will be both seamless and welcome by both parties. It's interesting that nowhere in this announcement were the Xbox or PlayStation consoles mentioned but that does make sense considering the fact that the next generation of consoles have yet to be named.
Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella stated that "Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation. Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers."
